Do you qualify to remove your debt review?
You qualify for the straightforward route if your debts are settled or nearly settled; if you are still over-indebted, no honest provider can promise to remove debt review for you. That one distinction decides everything, so settle it before you pay anyone.
If your accounts are paid up, or in most cases if everything except your home loan is settled and the bond is up to date, you are entitled to a clearance certificate from a debt counsellor. The certificate clears the flag. You do not need a court order, and you do not need a removal company.
Still over-indebted? Removal firms will offer to apply to court on your behalf, but courts are generally unwilling to lift review from someone who cannot afford the original repayments, because the process exists to protect exactly that person. That application usually fails. The one exception worth exploring is a genuine improvement in your income, which your own counsellor can assess before you pay a stranger.
And if you leave while over-indebted, re-entering later is not guaranteed. Being turned down for debt review explains why acceptance is never automatic.
How can you remove debt review fast?
The fastest legitimate route is a clearance certificate from your existing debt counsellor, and it usually comes down to a few phone calls once your accounts are settled.
- Ask your counsellor for final settlement figures on every account still under review.
- Pay them off, or ask about early settlement if a lump sum has come your way.
- Request your clearance certificate. Your counsellor sends it to the National Credit Regulator (NCR) and the credit bureaux, and the flag is removed.
No service you can buy will speed up a flag you do not qualify to have removed. If your original counsellor has closed or stopped answering, another registered counsellor can usually take over the paperwork. If you settle your debts, does the flag come off your credit report?
Yes, settling is the recognised trigger: once your accounts are settled, your counsellor issues the clearance certificate and the credit bureaux remove the debt review status from your report.
You can also settle early. Under review you may ask each credit provider for a settlement amount, and a bonus, pension payout or family help can close everything at once. One caution, though. Removing the flag does not erase your payment history. Late payments from before or during review may still show on each account for a while. That fades with time, and it is separate from the flag itself.
How long does removal take in South Africa?
With a clearance certificate, expect weeks rather than months; with a court application, expect months and no guarantee.
The certificate route is short because it is mostly paperwork: your counsellor issues it, the NCR records it, and each bureau updates your profile. Court applications, which only matter if you are arguing improved income, involve notices and hearings and drag on. Pull your credit report a few weeks after the certificate is issued. If the flag is still showing, query it with the bureau and attach your certificate.
How much does it cost to remove a debt review?
A clearance certificate should cost you little or nothing extra, because the fees around debt counselling are regulated; ask your counsellor for the current fee schedule in writing so there are no surprises.
Removal companies charge separately, and prices vary widely. Before paying one, run through this checklist:
- Ask whether you qualify, and why. An answer tied to settled debt or provable improved income is a good sign; vagueness is a warning.
- Treat guarantees of removal with suspicion, especially if you still owe money.
- Get the service in writing. A court application is one thing; chasing paperwork you could do yourself is another.
- Remember there is no official register of removal companies. If someone claims to be a debt counsellor, their registration can be checked with the NCR.
Can you get a loan after removal?
Yes, once the flag is gone you can apply for credit like anyone else, and lenders will judge your application on your income, expenses and repayment record from that day on.
Expect some caution from lenders at first, since your recent history includes restructured accounts. Small credit, paid perfectly, rebuilds a record faster than big applications. It is also worth asking the question lenders will ask: is this loan necessary? Many people land in review after a run of borrowing that felt normal at the time.
If you are unsure where you stand, ask a registered counsellor before you speak to a removal salesperson. Find and compare debt counsellors and put your situation to them plainly. One question protects your money: do I qualify, and why? If the answer is not a clear yes with reasons you can check, that money is better spent on your last remaining account.
